Olivia Rodrigo's Sour Becomes the Most Streamed Album by a Female Artist in Spotify History

On Thursday, May 16, the pop star's debut album, Sour, which was published in 2021, became the most streamed album by a female artist in Spotify history.  

In a press release, Sour "earned the most U.S. audio streams for a female debut album ever and broke the record for the most-streamed album in a week by a female artist on Spotify."  

The album also debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it "the longest-running debut album in the chart's top ten of the twenty-first century."  

Rodrigo's representative verified to PEOPLE that the record has sold over 21 million copies globally.  

At the time of its release, the "Get Him Back" singer, 21, stated that the 11-track album was absolutely "personal and close to my heart."  

Every song is incredibly personal and near to my heart. "Getting to share them with people is the most special thing I've ever done in my life,"  

Rodrigo wrote on Instagram, revealing behind-the-scenes photographs from the project. "Thank u to everyone who made this album happen."  

"Lastly thank you to Dan Nigro for making this entire body of work with me in his garage lol," Rodrigo concluded.  

His undeniable talent and undying belief in me has forever changed me as an artist and a person."
