Messi misses, Argentina beats Ecuador in penalty shootout

Argentina's world winners saved their all-time captain Lionel Messi.

Argentina defeated Ecuador 1-1 (4-2 in penalties kicks) in their Copa America quarterfinal encounter Thursday night at NRG Stadium in Houston to go to the semifinals.

Argentina will play the winner of Friday's Venezuela-Canada quarterfinal at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The semifinal will be played July 9 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Messi walked up with the ball and lined up Argentina's opening kick to start. And he missed.

Good plan to chip it down the middle, however ball hit crossbar and went over net.

However, Messi's miss didn't deter Argentina, the defending Copa America 2021 and World Cup 2022 champions. They delivered for Messi in worse situations before.

In the penalty round, Julian Alvarez, Alexis Mac Allister, Gonzalo Montiel, and Nicolás Otamendi scored, while Dibu Martinez held Ecuador to two penalties from John Yeboah and Jordy Caicedo..

Argentinians sang and danced while Ecuador sadly conceded defeat after their stunning comeback.
